HCPC registration renewal is now open for biomedical scientists

Tagged In:  Career Advice, CPD, HCPC

From 1 September 2015, biomedical scientists will need to renew their registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Renewal closes on 30 November 2015, giving biomedical scientists three months to complete the registration renewal process in order to continue practising.

Professionals are encouraged to renew their registration using the simple online system on the HCPC’s website. Paper renewal forms can be requested, however, this is a longer process.

Renewing your registration

In order to renew, professionals must complete a professional declaration and pay a renewal fee. To access your online account, you will need your registration number and authentication code (found on the back of your current registration card or on correspondence received from the HCPC prompting you to renew).

The professional declaration confirms that:

  • you have continued to practise your profession since your last registration; or
  • have not practised your profession since your last registration but have met the HCPC’s return to practice requirements
  • you continue to meet the HCPC’s standards of proficiency for the safe and effective practice of biomedical science
  • there have been no changes to your health or relating to your good character which you have not advised HCPC about and which would affect your safe and effective practice of your profession
  • you continue to meet the HCPC’s standards for continuing professional development (CPD)
  • (only those selected for audit are required to submit CPD information)

The HCPC first published standards of proficiency for biomedical scientists when its register opened in July 2003. These standards, which are regularly reviewed, must be met by all biomedical scientists on the HCPC register. Registration renewal takes place every two years.

Hi Rachel,
Thank you for getting in contact. If you are looking to work as a Medical Laboratory Assistant, it is not essential to register with the HCPC but it is required by many employers – so I would suggest you do register. As a graduate, you may also find that you are eligible for a reduced registration fee. See this link for more details:
You can apply for registration by downloading an application form via this link:
I hope this is helpful, and good luck in your career.
Kind regards,
