How nursing managers can effectively support their teams

Last week, we shared with you some of the best professional advice that many of our nurses had ever heard.



This week, our nurses have shared their feedback relating to what on-going professional support and guidance they would like to receive from their Matrons or Nursing Team Leaders. 

As you would expect, there was a wide range of responses from our community.

Provide continuous support for the development of staff…


“Offer training and exposure to other areas of health and social care.” Jospeh, Dagenham

“Managers and team leaders should provide clinical supervision, peer support, encourage further learning and give positive feedback. Managers who are present on the ward and role models are essential.” Margaret, Manchester

“Continue with professional development and give each staff member the chance to have protected learning times within their roles of working hours.” Mark, Northampton

“Acknowledge difficulties and support individuals to achieve their best and do not give generic supervisions.” Reuben, Batley

Encourage independence of team members…


“Allow empowerment in all clinicians. Team leaders should empower their staff to develop and make decisions.” Carole, Coventry

Communicate effectively and often…
