Prioritising patient care: our nurses share their opinions

If you’ve been reading our blogs over the last few weeks, you may have noticed that we’ve been sharing the thoughts and opinions of our nursing community.

We work with thousands of fantastic nurses across the country, so it’s been a real eye opener to hear what you have to say about some pressing issues such as how to prevent burnout, how we can recruit new nurses to the profession and even find out what you think sets a great nurse out from peers.

In the last of our feedback series, we have asked our nursing community to let us know what changes the government should be making to prioritise patient care and enable experienced nurses to get back to what they trained to do.

You would like to see the government take the following steps...

“Boost nursing students and budgets to allow more nurse recruitment and education.” Ashleigh, Glasgow

“Teach children from a young age about health and how to look after yourself mentally and physically, when to seek medical help, use of other resources and self-help. Education in healthcare as well as good research and employing more nurses and health care professionals” Sandi, Crediton

“Ensure that there is an adequate skill mix of staff. Look at what they can do to train and retain staff” Sandra, Liverpool

“Continually promoting the benefits of constant professional development” Ruth, Gorbridge

“Focus on the patient and not statistics and box ticking.” Bobby, London

“Make greater use of new technology like the new Health Minister said. Stop chasing people so much for appointments. Personal responsibility is key.” Tim, Brighton

“Ensure safer staffing levels” Amy, Rotherham

“Provide extra nurse's & support, plus increased pay for recognition of their work & commitment to the profession.” Thomas, Liverpool
